POPs-compliant disposal · Ipswich
Sofas, armchairs and upholstered seating collected and disposed of in line with the rules on persistent organic pollutants (POPs).
Since the start of 2023, the Environment Agency has required upholstered domestic seating that contains persistent organic pollutants to be destroyed, normally by incineration, instead of going to landfill or being mixed with other waste. That covers most sofas, armchairs, sofa beds, footstools and upholstered chairs.
POPs are chemicals that were used in some flame retardants. They do not break down easily and can build up in the environment and in people. Because there is no simple way to tell which sofas contain them, the rules treat upholstered seating as POPs waste unless it is proven otherwise.
This is why most skip companies will not take sofas, and why a sofa has to be collected separately. We collect sofas and armchairs across Ipswich and take them to facilities that handle POPs waste correctly. If a sofa is in good condition with its fire label, we will try to pass it on for reuse first.

Upholstered seating containing POPs must not be mixed with other waste, crushed in a compactor with other waste or sent to landfill. Putting a sofa in a skip breaks these rules.
A sofa in good condition can be reused, for example donated to a charity or sold. Charities usually need the fire safety label to be attached.
Landlords, furniture retailers and businesses disposing of upholstered seating must make sure it goes to a facility that handles POPs waste and keep the paperwork.
You can remove wooden or metal frames, but the upholstered parts still need to be treated as POPs waste. It is usually easier to send the whole item.
