Plasterboard disposal: what to expect

Plasterboard is one of the few common building materials that must be kept separate from other waste. When gypsum is landfilled alongside biodegradable waste, it can produce hydrogen sulphide, a toxic, foul-smelling gas. For that reason, many skip companies will not accept plasterboard mixed with general waste.

We provide separate plasterboard collections across Ipswich, either in bags for smaller jobs or in a dedicated skip for refurbishments and new builds. Clean offcuts and stripped boards go to a recycling facility where the gypsum is separated from the paper lining and turned into new plasterboard.

Keeping plasterboard separate is also cheaper. Clean gypsum costs less to process than mixed waste containing gypsum, and it avoids extra charges for contaminated skips.

Plasterboard we collect

New-build offcuts

Clean offcuts from drylining and partitions.

Stripped boards

Old plasterboard from refurbishments and strip-outs.

Plaster and skim

Bagged plaster waste, kept separate from rubble.

Coving and gypsum products

Other gypsum-based materials.

Bag collections

One-tonne bags for small jobs. See skip bags.

Dedicated skips

Plasterboard-only skips for larger sites.

Handling plasterboard waste

Keep it dry

Wet plasterboard is heavier and harder to recycle. Keep bags and skips covered where possible.

Keep it clean

Remove wood, metal studs and general rubbish from plasterboard waste. Small amounts of paint, screws and tape are usually acceptable.

Watch for older materials

Some textured coatings and older boards may contain asbestos. If you are stripping a pre-2000 building, check first. See asbestos testing.

Homeowners

Small amounts of household plasterboard may be accepted at Suffolk recycling centres, usually in a separate container. For anything more, use a separate collection.
