Skip hire: what to expect

A skip is still the simplest way to deal with a lot of waste over a few days. We drop it where you want it, you fill it at your own pace, and we take it away when you are done. Everything we collect goes back to a licensed transfer station, where it is sorted so that rubble, metal, wood, cardboard and green waste can be recycled.

Most of our skip hire in Ipswich is for homeowners doing a clear-out, a kitchen or bathroom refit, or a garden project, and for builders who need a skip on site for the length of a job. We deliver across Ipswich and the surrounding villages, usually the next working day.

Not sure which size you need? Tell us what the job is and roughly how much waste there is, and we will suggest the smallest skip that will take it. Ordering too small means paying for a second skip; ordering too big means paying for space you do not use.

Skip sizes we hire

Mini skip (2 to 3 yards)

Holds roughly 20 to 30 bin bags. Good for a small bathroom refit or a garden tidy. Mini skip hire.

Midi skip (4 to 5 yards)

Holds roughly 35 to 50 bin bags. Suits a kitchen refit or a full single-room clear-out.

Builders' skip (6 to 8 yards)

Holds roughly 60 to 80 bin bags. The most popular size for renovations and house clearances. Builders' skip hire.

Maxi skip (10 to 14 yards)

For bulky, lighter waste such as furniture and packaging. Not suitable for heavy rubble.

Roll-on roll-off (20 to 40 yards)

For commercial sites, large clearances and demolition. RoRo skip hire.

Things to know before hiring a skip

Do you need a skip permit?

If the skip can go on your driveway or private land, you do not need a permit. If it has to go on the road or pavement, it needs a permit from Suffolk County Council, which is the highways authority for Ipswich. We apply for it on your behalf and add the cost to your order. Skips on the road also need lights and cones, which we provide.

Choosing where it goes

Our lorry needs about 3 metres of width and clear headroom to drop the skip. Check for overhanging trees, low cables and parked cars. A sheet of plywood under the skip protects block paving and tarmac from marks.

Heavy waste and weight limits

Soil, rubble and concrete are heavy. Larger skips are not safe to lift when filled with them, so for heavy waste we recommend a builders' skip or smaller, filled level with the top. For big volumes of soil, grab hire is often cheaper.

Filling it safely

Fill the skip level with the top edges. We cannot legally take away a skip that is overloaded, because loose waste can fall onto the road. Break down furniture and put flat items at the bottom to make the most of the space.

How long can you keep it?

Standard hire is up to two weeks. Longer hire is available, and builders often keep a skip on site for the whole job with exchanges when it is full.

How it works

  1. Tell us about the job

What the waste is, roughly how much, and where it is.

  2. Fixed quote

We recommend the right service and confirm the price.

  3. Delivery or collection

On the agreed day, with permits arranged if needed.

  4. Sorted and recycled

Waste taken to a licensed site, with a transfer note for you.

What affects the price of skip hire

Every job is priced individually. These are the main factors.

Skip size
Bigger skips cost more to hire and to tip.
Type of waste
Heavy rubble and soil cost more to process than light, mixed waste.
Permit
A skip on the road needs a council permit, which adds to the cost.
Hire length
Keeping a skip beyond the standard period adds a daily or weekly charge.
Location
Most of Ipswich is in our standard area; remote villages may cost more.

Frequently asked questions

How quickly can I get a skip in Ipswich?

Usually the next working day if the skip is going on private land. Skips on the road need a council permit first, which can add a few days.

What size skip do I need for a house clearance?

A builders' skip of 6 to 8 yards suits most two or three-bedroom house clearances. For larger properties, two skips or a house clearance service may work out better.

Can I put a skip on the road outside my house?

Yes, with a permit from Suffolk County Council. We apply for it, and the skip will have lights and cones as the permit requires.

Do I need to be home when the skip is delivered?

No, as long as we know exactly where it should go and the space is clear. Many customers mark the spot with a chalk cross or a note.

What happens to the waste?

It goes to a licensed waste transfer station, where it is sorted and as much as possible is recycled. Rubble is crushed into recycled aggregate, wood is chipped, and metal and cardboard are sent for recycling.

Why can't I put a sofa in a skip?

Upholstered seating usually contains persistent organic pollutants (POPs), which have to be incinerated rather than landfilled or mixed with other waste. We collect sofas separately. See sofa disposal.
