Skip bags: what to expect

Skip bags, also called builder's bags or hippo-style bags, are the low-cost option for small jobs. You collect a bag, or have one delivered, keep it until you are ready, fill it, then book a collection. There is no hire period ticking away while you work.

They suit gardens, small refits and tidy-ups where a skip would be too big, or where there is not enough space for a skip lorry to drop one. A bag can sit in a front garden, on a drive or by the gate, as long as our crane lorry can park within reach.

Each bag holds about one cubic metre, roughly 10 to 15 bin bags of mixed waste. For heavy waste like soil and rubble, a bag will hold up to around one tonne, though filling it halfway with rubble is usually enough to reach that.

How skip bags work

Get your bag

We drop a bag off or you collect one. It folds flat, so you can store it until you need it.

Fill it

Load general waste, garden waste or rubble at your own pace. There is no time limit.

Place it within reach

Position the bag within about 4 metres of where our lorry can park, clear of cables and trees.

Book a collection

Tell us it is ready. We lift it onto the lorry by crane, usually within a couple of working days.

Tips for using skip bags

Do not overfill

The bag must be closeable at the top for safe lifting. Waste piled above the rim has to be removed before collection.

Watch the weight

Rubble and soil are heavy. Fill a bag no more than halfway with heavy materials, and top up with lighter waste if you like.

Keep it on firm ground

Place the bag on a flat, firm surface so it does not tip or tear when lifted.

Same rules as skips

Fridges, tyres, plasterboard mixed with other waste, paint and asbestos cannot go in a skip bag.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a skip bag hold?

About one cubic metre, or around 10 to 15 bin bags of mixed waste, up to about one tonne.

How long can I keep a skip bag?

As long as you like. There is no hire period; you book a collection when it is full.

Where does the bag need to be?

Within about 4 metres of where our crane lorry can park, with no overhead cables in the way.

Can I use a skip bag from a DIY shop?

Yes, if it is a rated one-tonne lifting bag. We may charge a little more for bags we did not supply.

Can I put soil in a skip bag?

Yes, but fill it no more than halfway so it stays within the safe lifting weight.

Do I need to be home for collection?

No, as long as the bag is in the agreed spot and reachable.
